However, it might be a little difficult for you to figure out which car colors are available for which Tesla models.

This article will serve as a complete guide to the different colors that the four main Tesla vehicles come in, which colors are the most popular, and the history of Tesla car colors. Let’s get right into it!

A Guide to Tesla Car Colors: Interior and Exterior

How Are Tesla Colors Offered?

One important aspect to understand about Tesla vehicles is that like most vehicle manufacturers, different options and changes are made to the same “model” of a vehicle throughout the years. In this way, it can be a bit difficult to track all of the varying color combinations and options that Tesla has offered since it started making electric vehicles over 10 years ago. Even the yet-to-be-launched Cybertruck already has the internet speculating on its available color options.

However, we’re equipped to go over each color option and model with you. Whether you want to purchase a used Tesla or a new Tesla, you will be able to confidently make a decision on color choice.

The Model S

Tesla Car Colors

The first Tesla, a sedan known as the Model S, became available in 2012. In its release it had a whopping nine exterior color options and three interior color options, allowing Model S buyers to have a lot of color combinations.

In 2012, these were the initial colors upon release:

Exterior Colors:  (in alphabetical order)

Anza Brown Metallic

Catalina White

Monterey Blue Metallic

San Simeon Silver Metallic

Sequoia Green Metallic

Shasta Pearl White

Sierra Black

Signature Red

Tiburon Gray Metallic

Interior Colors:

Black

Grey

Tan

As the years went on, the names were quickly shortened and simplified. From 2013- 2014, the colors for the exterior and interior were identical, just with the shortened names. 2015 brought the addition of Midnight Silver Metallic, Deep Blue Metallic, and Obsidian Black Metallic which brought the total number of Model S colors to eleven.

2016 then saw the removal of Blue Metallic and Gray Metallic. In 2017-2018, the Model S colors available further shrunk with the reduction of total colors to seven from the removal of Solid White and Titanium Metallic.

From 2019 on, up until the present-day production of the Tesla Model S, the color pool shrunk even more. Now, there are only five exterior colors and three interior color options, leaving the color options for the Model S look like this:

Exterior Colors:  (in alphabetical order)

Deep Blue Metallic

Midnight Silver Metallic

Pearl White Multi-Coat

Red Multi-Coat

Solid Black

Interior Colors:

Black

Grey

Tan

The Model X

The next Tesla Model was Model X  which came to market with a diverse range of color options. Upon release in 2016, you could purchase a Model X with any of these 10 exterior color choices and three interior choices.

Midnight Silver Metallic

Obsidian Black Metallic

Interior Colors:

Ultra White

Like the Model S, the color options were progressively axed over time and production. From 2017-2018, there were only seven color options, down from ten, having eliminated Signature Red, Solid White, and Titanium Metallic from the lineup.

Also similar to the Model S, Tesla has since maintained the same basic color lineup for 2019-present for the Model X with just five exterior colors and three interior color choices which are:

Exterior Colors:  (in alphabetical order)

Deep Blue Metallic

Midnight Silver Metallic

Pearl White Multi-Coat

Red Multi-Coat

Solid Black

Interior Colors:

Cream/Tan

The Model 3

The next Tesla Model, Model 3, did not come to market with many color options. It was released in 2017 and featured seven exterior options and just one interior color option upon its release date.

In 2018, Tesla added a second interior option, black and white, but just as their other vehicles had color options reduced, so did the Model 3 in 2019. From 2019 to the present, you can only purchase a Tesla Model 3 in five exterior color options and two interior color options.

The Model Y

The next Tesla Model, Model Y unfortunately seems to have suffered the same fate as the other Tesla vehicles. Upon its release in 2020, the Model Y only had five exterior color options and two interior color options.

These options have stayed the same throughout the three years that the Model Y has been in production. They are as follows:

Exterior Colors:  (in alphabetical order)

Deep Blue Metallic

Midnight Silver Metallic

Pearl White Multi-Coat

Red Multi-Coat

Solid Black

Interior Colors:

Black

Black and White

Conclusion

All in all, it’s clear to see that the amount of options for color has significantly reduced throughout the lifetime of Tesla EV production. However, these car colors are all very high quality and top of the market. The metallics that Tesla uses are thought to be some of the greatest car colors of all time. So, which color combination will you pick for your Tesla?
