Overtime is a touchy subject in corporate America. On one hand, overtime can provide an employee with great financial benefits for doing more than their share for the company that they work for. However, overtime can also be a culprit of poor work-life balance.

Those that are interested in working for Tesla should be aware of the expectations and opportunities for overtime at Tesla. So, how does overtime work at Tesla?

In this blog post, we will discuss how overtime works at Tesla. This discussion will include overtime for both office workers and factory workers. These expectations can differ greatly depending on which role you perform for Tesla.

How Does Overtime Work at Tesla?

As a company that has large deadlines to meet, overtime opportunities are plentiful at Tesla. There also seem to be times in which overtime opportunities are not available, which can give employees a break from these expectations.

Tesla has several policies for suppliers that are public knowledge related to their overtime, however, it can be hard to find information on overtime policy for their own company. Their code of conduct for their suppliers is pretty standard for labor laws in the U.S. Tesla’s suppliers may not enforce overtime. Their workers must have at least one day off every week and launch breaks during each shift.

These standards do not seem to translate to Tesla’s own work practices, though. Tesla’s factory workers work overtime nearly every week out of the year due to the nature of their schedules. These factory workers work four days a week for 12 hours a day. This is a grand total of 48 hours per week.

Workers are compensated for these shifts. However, these overtime hours do seem to be mandatory as this is how the factory employee shifts are organized by design. If this is the case, (and the reports are consistent and plentiful), then Tesla is directly going against what it requires from its suppliers.

How Many Hours of Overtime Do Tesla Workers Work?

It is hard to say exactly how many hours of overtime Tesla workers perform. Those in office jobs at Tesla have so far stayed quiet on their overtime expectations. The factory workers seem to be especially vocal about their working conditions online, so it is easier to gather reports from current and former Tesla employees.

For those factory employees on this 4/12 schedule, the minimum amount of overtime that they work per week is 8 hours of overtime. In times of high deadlines, people report working 13-14 hours in order to meet expectations for their job roles.

Many employees on Glassdoor answer the question ‘What is overtime like at Tesla?’ with responses like “too much overtime”, “lots of overtime hours”, “mandatory overtime”, and “always working overtime”.

It seems like Tesla employees struggle with work-life balance considerations and an excess of overtime expected from them. Other reports mention that it is also hard to take time off or take time for themselves.

Conclusion

In conclusion, overtime at Tesla seems to be fairly intense. For those who work in Tesla’s factory worker positions, overtime is required as part of the position with the expectation of 48 hours worked per week. These positions also reported additional overtime required in times of large deadlines or increased working expectations.
